Did you see my last post regarding my hack fix for this?  I'll snip and
paste a little here...

    Okay, so I found a simple hack. . . All I have to do is put in
    a "/usr/bin/chvt 1" in my /etc/X11/xdm/Xreset script.  I assume kdm and
    gdm can be adapted accordingly.
