Iirc, PC3200 RAM is backwards compatible in the way that you expect. But 
I tried PC5400 RAM in a server once, and it doesn't even have the same 
number of pins! Not sure whether PC4200 has the same pinout or not, and 
it may be different for laptops, but I do recall that the "obvious" 
answer isn't.
