Same here on a T60p-2623 using Bios 2.03, custom 2.6.18.3, tp_smapi 0.30,  
ibm_acpi 12a, Xgl server and fglrx 8.31.5.
I get the same thinkpad_ec error, the brightness keys work, but the GUI  
popup for the brightness does not change upon pressing the keys.
