Well, I found an older 2.6.17 kernel (from a recent Knoppix) and got
that installed. Seemed ok for a bit, but wasn't. Same crash occurred.
I guess that means the problem is caused by something else that got
updated today. So I'm clueless; I don't even recall what else that
was.
In the absence of better ideas, I guess I'll go back to the Edgy
install CD and not upgrade again for a bit.
