[ltp] R40 screen trouble

I was trying out various configurations using the framebuffer for the
purpose of getting around the RAM suspend battery drain bug.

During this, the framebuffer driver seems to have messed with the BIOS
display settings. I know this since I turned the boot display setting
back from "CRT" to "Both".

However, while I can get text mode displayed both on the laptops own
screen and an external screen, when I switch to X, it only shows up on
the external Screen.

What would cause a thing like that to happen, and how do I turn it
back?
