By which I gather there is no physical connector for it.

You could get a generic USB port extender/docking station.  I have two with=
=20
USB ports, parallel & serial port, PS2 keyboard and PS2 mouse, and an extra=
=20
ethernet connector, and they work fine (generally) with Kubuntu Breezy &=20
previously with Gentoo.
