[ltp] T43: Problems playing DVD movies

I am having problems playing DVD movies. I have a new T43.
Facts:
- I have set the region on my DVD drive correctly
- I have enabled DMA on the DVD drive, by using sata's experimental
atapi (or whatever) support
- I have tried every player I can find
At first I could not play movies, and got tons of i/o errors in logs.
This was because the DVD drive came with no region set. I set it to 1. I
no longer get errors in logs, but I get various errors with the
differing players.
It is important to note that my desktop runs the same distro. And also
the same versions and dependancies with the same features (USE flags in
gentoo) enabled or disabled. I can play these disks with no problem
whatosever on my desktop, however my T43 is where all the problems are.
I have tried more than one disk, they always work in my desktop but not
on the laptop.
I have tried as hard as I can to make the software situation exaclty the
same. So this is where I'm at a loss.
I am seeking help, obviously.
And now for the various errors with various dvd players. These get quite
long indeed,

I have tried varying -vo options including x11, which should *always* work.

At this point, i sometimes do, sometimes don't, get a window which is
apparently the dvd menu. When I can see it, the video is horribly
garbled in big blocky chunks. The audio is somewhat understandable.
Clicking on any of the dvd menu items results in the video window
disappearing, and not coming back.
At this point I simply CTL-C.

No accelerated IMDCT transform found
This time, the video window comes up. Crystal clear, i can see the
various warnings. Eventually those are done, and I get a popup window
saying the movie is "crypted". Which obviously doesn't help me a damn bit.
I don't know of any other dvd movie players.
