[ltp] T30 memory not recognized

Lately, I've noticed that my thinkpad t30 spends a lot of accessing the 
disk. Going to the setup menu on boot I see only 256MB of memory listed. 
I have both slots full, one says 256 and the other must be at least that 
(doesn't say on it). I swithc the memory cards or leave either one out 
and it still says just 256MB on bootup. So, it appears to me that the 
second memory slot is not being recognized. Anyone know if there is 
anything that can  be done about this short of sending it out for
