I don't know about older Thinkpads but in many newer ones with Intel
chipsets it is possible to use the snd-intel8x0m driver from the ALSA
subsystem in the kernel along with the Smart Link modem daemon in ALSA
mode.

There is also WinSCP for the Windows side.
