I appreciate your advice but don't believe it's the problem in this case.  

The machine failed repeatedly with a "CPU soft error" until I set the
first partition to active, which rewrote part of the MBR.  After that
it didn't fail at all.  The behavior was the same whether booting
Knoppix or XP (I think - XP just hung - Knoppix said the bit about
soft error).
