'ifup eth1' generally works for me. My /etc/network/interfaces has this:
auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp
wireless-mode managed
wireless-essid any
Generally boot or resume brings up the network automatically and I
almost never have to fiddle with it. Sometimes I try to force a
specific network with iwconfig eth1 essid foo.
