[ltp] 1GB in 1-slot T30 -- no bootie

My T30 just suffered the death of its second memory expansion slot,
cutting me down from 512 MiB to 256 MiB.
I purchased a 1 GiB PC2700 memory module to install into the working slot.
When I install this module and boot Linux, the kernel panics saying that
it can't find a root filesystem. It appears that the controller doesn't
work.
The official maximum memory size of a T30 is 1 GiB but at thinkwiki.org
it is reported that someone successfully installed 2 x 1 GiB into a
T30.
Anyone else seen this problem?
