Which kernel? What disk subsystem (libata or the old ide)?
And you can do it from userspace too (when *not* using suspend2 to
sleep-to-ram), so your hibernation script might be doing "hdparm -y" to
unload (park) the heads just before the sleep.
Also, when using APM, the BIOS may do it for you, if you're lucky.
