[ltp] IPW 2200 on Gentoo problem

I'va had this before, a version upgrade fixed it, but it's there again:

ipw2200: Unknown symbol iw_handler_set_spy
ipw2200: Unknown symbol iw_handler_get_thrspy
ipw2200: Unknown symbol wireless_send_event

Latest (1.1.1) ipw2200 sources on 2.6.15-r7 with both the ieee80211 and 
ipw2200 disabled in kernel configuration.

It's an R51 (1829MG) Gentoo system.

Any ideas?
