Would you store a car-tyre at 4 bar? No? Well... it is pretty much the  
same. The only difference is, that there is not physical, but a "chemical  
pressure" in a battery...
Actually scientists say that lithium batteries should be stored at 40%  
charge.

Another source of destruction is heat. But that is not a problem at  
(newer) thinkpads. The hd of my old gericom notebook got up to 52C. The  
battery was right behind it.... :-/
