Thanks for the reply, Bret.  I tried adapting your settings and
except for giving up on 1400x1050 there's been no change, at least not
in the sense of seeing a smooth well-formed font on the console.
I've just settled on 1024x768 and am getting on with life.  I spend
most of my time in X anyway so it's not a big deal, just surprising
-- and annoying. ;-)   John
