1W is insane for suspend-to-ram! My ThinkPad T43 draws about 255mWh when
suspended to RAM (2 memory sticks, 1024 + 512MB). There was an unfortunate
issue with one of the relatively recent kernels where I had to remove
uhci_hcd before sleeping, but once that has been established, everything
became peachy.

A 9-cell battery (rated at around 77Wh) should be able to hold a while.
On:
* minimum brightness
* sound off, wifi off, bluetooth off, no network
* powersave governor
* (no laptop mode, though)
... my TP is at about 12.5-12.8W. YMMV.
