That's the URL where I got the information on how to hot-swap the ultrabay
but when I followed it, that's what's happening... " echo eject
> > /proc/acpi/ibm/bay)" does power off the ultrabay (as I can tell by the
LED going off immediately), but about a second later my entire computer
freezes... there is no mouse activity, or anything, a total freeze.
Anyways, if anyone has had real experiences with this and want to share,
please do so.
Thanks,
Barny Sanchez

Dear All,
I am stuck with 312Mb on my X21, which is the official limit. Does anyone
know
if it is possible to use a stick with more than 256Mb, and if yes, where to
find one?
Many thanks

I just did a monster yum update on the machine, with almost 1.2 GB of
packages getting updated/replaced.
Before I started, I was listening to music no problems at all.
After the update, no more sound, kde sound server comes up saying it
cannot initialise the sound driver.
FC5 on a X60s. Current kernel version 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5smp. Going back to
previous kernel 2.6.17-1.2174_FC5smp doesnt help either.
Help!

Do you have /dev/dsp?
If so,
cat /dev/random > /dev/dsp
should make a noise. Then you need to fix KDE.
Else
do you have the right sound module loaded?

Greetings,
I'm playing around with my new z61p right now and I was wondering how
to get this wireless switch to work (I guess it turns off the wireless
radio(s) on a hardware basis)
What I found out so far is:
ibm_acpi sends an event for it: received event "ibm/hotkey HKEY
00000080 00007000"
(I entered the event in the "special key" section of the wiki).
So it would be easy to include an acpi action script to start/stop
daemons & services using this event key, however:
The same event is sent on turning it on and when turning it off, so
telling which way it was turned isn't possible by just looking at the
event.
Also, I couldnt find any hardware-based information about this script in
- /proc/acpi/*
- lshal
- lspci
Sooo... does anyone have any information about how to get the status
of this switch?

I think the new Thinkpads have ipw3945 cards. The older ipw* cards had a
file called '/sys/class/net/eth(X)/device/rf_kill' that read out the
status of the kill switch and writing to it affected that status. So
look for something like that.

No noise :(

I suspect so, since it is the same module (snd-hda-intel) that was being
used *before* the yum update, and that is still the module that is being
loaded.
Here's the weird one though - I can use xmms, change the prefs to use
alsa, then switch default device to HDA Intel: AD198x Analog (hw:0,0) and
xmms plays.
But if I try to play a WAV file from the command line use sox' "play"
(even as root):
# play question.wav
ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:1632:(snd_pcm_direct_parse_open_conf) Unknown field
ipc_sem
sox: Failed writing default: cannot open audio device
# ls -al /dev/dsp
crw------- 1 root root 14, 3 Sep 20 19:15 /dev/dsp
Running snd-config-soundcard lets me hear the sample sound, but kde's
sound system won't play ball with it (it did before the yum update).
Thanks for any inputs!

OK, more - I just fired up gaim from the commandline, and saw this:
[achitnis@vader] ~$ ALSA lib confmisc.c:670:(snd_func_card_driver) cannot
find card '0'
ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver
returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:391:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat
returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1070:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer
returned error: No such device
ALSA lib conf.c:3947:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such device
ALSA lib pcm.c:2143:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
This seems to be some alsa card confusion.
modprobe.conf says:
alias scsi_hostadapter ahci
alias eth1 ipw3945
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=0
remove snd-hda-intel { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; };
/sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-hda-intel
alias eth0 e1000

At a guess, have you got the OSS compat. modules loaded? These are the
snd_XXX_oss modules, eg snd_pcm_oss, snd_mixer_oss etc.

Slightly OT:
Now that Alsa has dmix (and FC5 probably enables it by default), Arts
can be completely ignored - and good riddance to it! We no longer need
Arts to multiplex sound applications, and it is complete overkill for
system beeps!
See here for how I solved it:
http://www.ruo3.org/~rjn/a22p-mdk11-0.php#sound
-> [2] Arts

If I were you, I'd try an alsa-driver -rc release from
www.alsa-project.org. I have an Intel HD Audio codec on my new Core 2
Duo motherboard, and it did not work properly until I used the drivers
available from that site instead of the in-kernel drivers.

OK, call off the firebrigade.
It was my fault.
I hadn't done an update in ages, and therefore had left the yum update
process running overnight and unattended.
I didn't notice that ATrpms was turned on by default, and that installed
ATrpms' alsa-lib.
I knocked them off, installed the FC5 updates alsa-lib packages, and Elvis
is back in the building.
Will do some more testing, but I think its fixed.
Thanks, all!

Thanks for the link. However, as all the devices he was tuning to
lower the power of were disabled in my configuration it does not help
-- except perhaps for CPU undervolting, but I doubt that MS Windows
does this?
I am curious to discover which component it is that MS Windows can
power down and Linux cannot. It feels like whatever is under the "IBM"
logo on the right hand side of the fingerprint reader.
Any suggestions?

Is spam really a problem that should get adressed by obfuscating mail
addresses? How long will it take until address spiders get smart
enough? (I got spam to mail addresses I never published or used for
sending mail anywhere, so I prefer local spam filters as they are more
effective IMO)

Mailman is really nice. Looking at the headers, I'd say this address
would be a good starting point:

I am surprised that you care so strongly given that you have an

Anyway, I prefer to see the real email address in the archives because it

We don't care. We don't have to. We're the Phone Company.

That file exists for ipw3945 cards too (Z61m here). However the whole
device only exists if the switch was on at least once after the module
was loaded. I don't know when exactly the acpi event occurs, It is
possible that you need to wait a bit for the files in
/sys/class/net/eth(X)/ to show up.

Subject: [ltp] Trying to eject ultrabay slim locks computer.
Reply-To: linux-thinkpad@linux-thinkpad.org
Hello everyone,
I am trying to eject my ultrabay by typing echo eject
> /proc/acpi/ibm/bay)and I see the power light of my ultrabay go off,
but the entire computer locks up. I have no other choice than to
manually power it down and back up again.
I have a Thinkpad T42 running Fedora Core 6, kernel 2.6.17-1.2647.fc6.
Right now the device I have in my ultrabay is de CDRW+DVD combo, and I
want to be able to pop this one out to insert another hard drive that I
have in a bay, or viceversa.
Any ideas, points, anything will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Barny

Subject: [ltp] Linux on T43p: Predesktop Area, Access IBM button and RnR
Reply-To: linux-thinkpad@linux-thinkpad.org
If I press Access IBM button on boot... it starts RnR... but there is'nt any
'Access IBM Predesktop Area' application on my screen!
I think the previous owner of this notebook has destroyed the Predesktop
Area (hidden partition /dev/sda2).
Using linux fdisk (any setting of Predesktop Area in BIOS: Normal, Secure or
Disable) I see same space available and just 1 partition: /dev/sda1 (NTFS).
If he has lost the hidden area/partition... can I install linux and write on
MBR?
Can I use ALL available space on my HD?
If tomorrow I delete linux partitions and re-install XP using a standard XP
disk... Access IBM button works again? Starts it RnR?
I need your help...!

No, you have to go down to security. Restart your computer, when you
see the IBM logo, hit the Access IBM button, this will bring you into
BIOS.
Page down to security, hit enter, you will see "Password, IBM security
chip, IBM Predesktop area. Page down to IBM Predesktop area, hit enter.
If like me you don't have the Predesktop, you will see Access IBM.... --
Current setting Disabled. You will then know for sure that it's
history.

Yes. I wanted that extra 4GB that was wasted.

That depends. If you have made the most recent Recovery Cds; , I think so;
someone else can jump in here. Then go into BIOS and change the
setting to start from disc, and insert the the first Recovery CD.
If you have not, come back to me on it.
HTH.
