Thank you for all your help and suggestions.
I installed and compiled a newer gentoo suspend2 kernel, uninstalled
hibernate-scripts, deleted all of /etc/hibernate, then re-merged
hibernate-scripts (had way too much of a mess in there to remember
what I had done), made only a *few* well documented changes and
reverted to using the X.org open source radeon driver.
I haven't tested it too much yet, but the handful of times I tried,
both sleep and hibernate worked.
I'm just gonna hope for the best for now, and if it stops working,
like you suggested, give Ubuntu a try.
