I had crashes on resume on my T42 with Radeon 7500, also running Ubuntu.
The fix was to edit /etc/default/acpi-support and disable all the
video-related options: SAVE_VBE_STATE, POST_VIDEO, USE_DPMS. (I don't
actually know which one of those was the one that caused problems; I
disabled all of them and the crashes went away.)
