Since you are buying an X series you obviously aren't a hardcore gamer.
So you should always go for the slower machine. Processor speed is 
totally irrelevant unless you are going to be doing some intensive task- 
such as compiling or gaming. We all know Windows is bloated and will 
slow the system down eventually, but an extra 200Mhz isn't going to stop 
that either.

What is it with the world and constantly upgrading for office work and 
web browsing?

Ah yes, the Windows bloat. But even XP should run quite happily on an 
800Mhz system with 512Mb RAM, so long as you keep reformatting (which 
you have to do on any system).

Personally I think an old 560 (400Mhz) would be perfectly adequate in 
terms of speed, especially if you are going to run Linux. Though the 
better battery life and minor features are a good reason for going for 
something newer.
