I have a R-40 with Linspire 5.1 & VMware.  I use two VMs, one with 
Ubuntu Server 6.06 and another with WinXP.  Networks are bridged in both 
VMs and when the cable is disconnected, they can still ping each other. 
  If the network is down, then they cannot communicate with each other.
