[ltp] save energy --> remove dvd drive?

Hi list!

Yesterday a friend of mine gave me the advice to remove the dvd drive  
while running from battery. Can I save a significant amount of energy by  
that?
Any opinions?
I have a R50e which means that there is no ultrabay. However, I can remove  
the device w/h causing a crash.
