[ltp] 770x TP internal modem won't work

I've tried mwave, version 2. The log messages (tail /var/log/message)
showed the modem setting up correctly. Running the chat script with pppd
seems to function normally. But, it won't grab the phone line and dial out.
No unusual error messages.

Strangely enough, the exact same software setup works fine with a
770z, which allegedly has the same internal modem. Exact same setup:
same /etc/mwavem.conf. Same /etc/init.d/mwavem setup script. Identical
/usr/sbin/mwavem binary. Same files in /usr/share/mwavem/. Yes, same
kernel version and Linux distro: Mandriva 2007, 2.6.17 kernel.

And, yes the 770x modem hardware tests okay under Windows, that is, it dials
out.

Any suggestions or insights would be appreciated.
