I'm not sure if it is related to what you see, but I also have _some_
problems when trying to use both the lcd and the external monitor at the
same time. In my case, I get something on both, but the image on the
external monitor wiggles like crazy, making it painful to look at. I've
searched for a while for a fix, and have only found one. When I want to
use both devices at the same time (for example, if the external monitor
is actually a projector, I'm giving a presentation and don't want to
have to be looking at the projected image), I use a program called
i855crt. If you install it, typing i855crt on the command line will tell
you more about options.
/etc/i855crt.conf will also have useful information.
