You need both $DISPLAY and $XAUTHORITY set to connect to an X server.
The ACPI scripts in Ubuntu have a getXuser function defined in
/usr/share/acpi-support/power-funcs that sets XAUTHORITY correctly for
the X server running on $displaynum.
If you're the only user of the laptop, you might just hardcode
XAUTHORITY to /home/$yourusername/.Xauthority.
