=2E.. and none of the distributions out there actually do that (=3D=3D supp=
ly=20
codecs for *every* digital format out of the box). Windows came with=20
*some* codecs, just not the ones required to play that particular Pink=20
Floyd DVD.

In hindsight, you are right -- it is more fair to compare Windows XP to a=
=20
linux distribution, rather than the linux kernel: Microsoft supplies an=20
operating system and some additional software packages. However, I fail to=
=20
see how asking for a third-party software that they have no control over=20
to be installed out of the box is even remotely reasonable.

No it does not. It does not provide codecs for *every* digital format "out=
=20
of the box".

Windows "thingy"? :)

There will always be useful software packages outside the scope of a=20
distribution (a couple of days back I tried to find rlfe; my distribution=
=20
did not supply it; neither did RHEL. I ended up downloading the source=20
from a debian archive and compiling it "outside" the package manager). MS=
=20
made a different choice regarding the scope of the software they support=20
out of the box. Watching that Pink Floyd DVD requires software which needs=
=20
to be additionally installed -- this happens regardless of whether one=20
rolls out windows or linux. The only difference is that a number of (all?)=
=20
linux distros have a package manager that makes the task easier. And some=
=20
of the distros out there have an installation medium (e.g. a set of=20
liveCDs) that already has such software included, so that one can watch=20
Pink Floyd DVDs while a gazillion of packages is being copied/downloaded.

The *only* real difference here is the specific choice of packages.
