This sounds very much like an ACPI/kernel issue. The easiest way to 
diagnose it is to run something like an Ubuntu LiveCD, which has a later 
kernel - if you problem goes away, it's definitely a kernel issue in 
SLED10; else it's perhaps a hardware bug (but this is unlikely).

Audio continues not to work. My question is

How much troubleshooting have you done? which sound modules have you 
loaded? Does /dev/dsp exist?  Could it be something as trivial as one of 
the volume mixers being set to zero?
