I have pondered this among other deep philosophical questions, but all too
often I am foiled by the sheer grand scope of the universe and its
metaphysics.
My wireless PCMCIA card is based on that TI chipset which is not natively
supported by the linux kernel. I have patches for a beta driver, but have
not yet attempted to configure and install them. For whatever reason, the
mini-PCI card underneath the keyboard was not included with this machine.
Finding a mini-pci card that does the job, and which is compatible with
the IBM bios, would be the Right Thing To Do, if my reading of various
bits of documentaion is correct, but I have not yet got around to that
either.
Ndiswrapper is, therefore, the solution that makes the card work now.

My X30 does, however, happily talk to all the other peripheral devices I
own with minimal fuss.
