If it is a kernel thread, it is because you use thinkpad-acpi 0.18, and told
it that you want some of the keys that require NVRAM polling. Read the
docs, it explains everything.
If it is not a kernel thread, it is some userspace helper to do the polling,
like "thinkpad-keys" or "tpb". I just removed these by force from my Debian
Etch install, and disabled KDE's builtin thinkpad support crap...
