Hello,

I have a r61 with a Quadro 140M and 1680x1050 LCD. If you use the nvidia
proprietary driver, you can use the GUI nvidia-settings to setup the second
monitor as a "separate screen" right or left of the primary screen. If you
tick the xinerama option, then you'll have your main screen unchanged, whil=
e
the second monitor will show a "clean" area with only your wallpaper (no
panels, no icons). You will then be able to :
- drag your windows from your first monitor to the second
- maximize windows on one screen only
- open a presentation with OOo Impress and display it on the second screen
(in OOo : Diaporama settings -> presentation -> presentation monitor ->
monitor 2)
- play videos fullscreen (mplayer -xineramascreen 2)
- have screens with different resolutions (eg 1680x1050 and 1024x768)
- for acroread, I didn't test but evince sure wors well in such a
configuration
- but you'll have to restart X when you plug the external monitor

Although, after having upgraded to Xorg 7.3, X wouln't start with xinerama
enabled, so I downgraded to Xorg 7.2. I hope that the problem is
nvidia-related and will be solved in the next driver release.

Maybe I could use Xrandr, but at the moment I need the dual-screen to be
working and didn't try.
