...and everything I can manage to test is agrees, so this is the time to
call me hardware vendor and enquire politely about how I got something a
little different from what I paid for.

In the end the most convincing thing was to test the VESA BIOS from DOS
mode using a range of tools, and to try setting the 1920x1200 modes;
none of the tools listed the higher resolution and nothing succeeded in
setting the mode.
