Only in windows is the screen resolution hard-coded at 96dpi. Linux
allows you to change it, such that eg an 8pt font is always the same
number of mm high, whether it's displayed on a 133dpi screen, a 96 dpi
screen, or a physical printout.
The higher the resolution, the better. There's no downside whatsoever,
in Linux. You want something like this in xorg.conf (mine is for 15"
1600x1200):
Section "Monitor"
DisplaySize 304 228 # Sort out tiny fonts - these are width,
# height in mm.
EndSection
Then, configure KDE/Gnome etc to have font sizes around 8-10pt. You can
turn off antialiasing too - it's totally unnecessary at high dpi.
Also, enjoy much better viewing of digital photos. For games, xrandr is
useful to temporarily drop the resolution.
