This was recently fixed in Ubuntu Gutsy.  With kernel 2.6.22-11-generic
sound works for me without having to recompile ALSA.

(and also unmute the Speakers and Headphones switches with alsamixer or
gnome-volume-control)

There are two sets of instructions on there, one for thinkfinger, the
other one for something else.  I used the thinkfinger ones, and
fingerprint recognition works, mostly:

  * works fine in gdm

  * works with sudo

  * works for console logins

  * doesn't work with gnome-screensaver

  * doesn't work with gksu (and wedges fingerprint recognition for all
    other apps until I manually killall gksu)
