I cant help you with the software, but can comment on your quoted 
battery run time.
 IF as you say your getting about 4 hrs life from a fully charged 
battery, then for an A series thinkpad your doing better than any Ive 
come across so far.
And Ive currently several A series thinkpads from its forerunner the  
390x  to the a22m. all with the 15in screens.
Id be be very surprised if youll get any better battery run time.
 What battery do you have? 9 cell? genuine IBM? how old?
Could do with someof those!!!. Best life seen has been just over 2.5hrs.
