yep 2.6.24-8
I am using the wired network when this happens, i think always.
I did search for NMI in my log files, but didn't find this message.
I'll try to watch a console like you suggest to see if I find anything interesting.
A few data points:
It happened last night when I wasn't using the pc.
It does not seem to be related to temperature of the cpu or the graphics card.
It does not seem to be related to usb (happens with no usb activity)

I have not yet tried to switch back to an older kernel, but i will if
this keeps up. But if older software works, it couldn't be hardware i
guess - right?

I did some googling on debugging a remote kernel with netlink, but didn't find anything i could use.
