If I recall, several reasons were suggeted. One being that the
presence of the battery had a function similar to UPS in that line
voltage gets regulated. Another was that some Thinkpads apparently
will not work without a battery installed. 

With a shiny new X61s, and never having used a laptop, I was not going
to try anything for which I was not pretty comfortable.
