=46irst of all, if you're not an familiar with using Debian's apt packet=20
system or an expert user do NOT install any Ubuntu flavor with an=20
alternative CD. Unless your system is not capable of the regular install=20
(eg. you have 256MB RAM). Alternative install confuses people. Just stick=20
to the regular CD which is nearly foolproof (no offense).=20

Hint: When referring to a Linux distribution write a full version=20
number. "Kubuntu 6" is to ambiguous, as it can mean either Kubuntu 6.06,=20
Kubuntu 6.06 LTS or Kubuntu 6.10. They are all alike, but they have=20
different problems. Note that Kubuntu 6.06 and Kubuntu 6.10 are both over a=
=20
year old, which is ancient history.=20

Always try to use the newest Kubuntu version (now it is 7.10). It's not=20
always better. I try each version since 6.06 on my T23 and each version is=
=20
different, ie. every time something doesn't work out of the box and every=20
time it's something else! How they manage to do that is beyond me.=20
Plain old Debian is still better for me.=20

Copying a CD to a hard drive will NOT work unless you know how the Kubuntu=
=20
install disk is created. Since you're considering that you don't know it.=20
Rest assured that if you knew you'd never would want to do that.=20
Three words: Waste Of Time=E2=84=A2.=20

You seem to have misinterpreted Richard's suggestions. If you have a comman=
d=20
prompt system installed, which is what you have described in your original=
=20
mail, you are almost there to a working GUI.=20

Just as Richard wrote boot your machine into normal user (NOT root) command=
=20
prompt using the *first* boot option in GRUB menu (NOT recovery mode).=20
After you log into the text console a regular user command prompt in Ubuntu=
=20
looks just like that:=20

skipper:~$ _=20

"skipper" is your username (or any other you have picked). the "~" after th=
e=20
colon is the working directory (here: active user's home folder). Note that=
=20
the "$" sign assures you're not root. The underscore represents the cursor.=
=20

When you have this issue a command:=20

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Have your Kubuntu install disk handy. Do NOT connect the box to a broadband=
=20
internet connection, as it can lead to even more confusion. When the=20
command ends without errors (take a look at the last few lines of the=20
messages printed on the screen). You should have your KDE installed. I'm=20
not sure if KDE will started every time you boot your machine, but AFAIR it=
=20
will. This time you have to start it manually:=20

sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart

Now connect the box to the internet and upgrade your system using Adept.=20

If the KDE doesn't start you'd better install Kubuntu all over again using=
=20
regular 7.10 CD.=20

Hope it helps.=20

Happy New Year.=20

This reminds me. I have switched to Linux as my main desktop system on New=
=20
Year's Day in 2005. My only New Year's resolution that ever worked out.=20

Regards,=20
