For any difficult installation (RAM <=256MB, X11 not running 
out-of-the-box, ...), using the alternate cd and doing the text based 
"install a command line system" is the (usually) failsafe way. (This 
never failed for me)

And just being this the failsafe way is reason enough for my not to even 
try the "nice" other ways.

Once system and network are ok, it's easy to install all the rest, e.g. 
using the meta packages ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop etc.

With a filled local proxy, this installation way is also the fastest 
one, by far!
