I highly recommend an Atheros based PCMCIA card that uses the Madwifi
driver. Why? Because even though the current driver is available as
source in the non-free section, it builds perfectly with Debian's
module-assistant which is very easy (details in
/usr/share/doc/madwifi-source/README.Debian). And a Free driver is
under development as I understand it, so hopefully the future is bright
for Atheros cards.
