You don't actually *need* 3d acceleration for anything except pretty
screensavers and compiz. 2D acceleration is nice (it makes
vertical-scrolling smoother), but not really needed on a machine with a
fast CPU. Fglrx also seems to cause the occasional system hang.
On my T60p, I have been using the vesa (generic) driver for ages, and am
perfectly happy with it.
