Does the EC in newer ThinkPads no longer include the
critical-temperature shutdown? Of course, running regularly into this
limit is really stressful to the hardware, but it should save it if it
happens once or twice in the life of the ThinkPad.
My T20 (which died blink-of-death now, maybe correlated) ran several
times into that limit. I transport the laptop in a bag on a bike (not a
very hardware-friendly way, but at least the bag upholstered (right
word, just got it from a dictionary)) every day for around 4 miles,
while in suspend to RAM. Sometimes a resume event triggered a resume
*inside* the bag. The fan would get to maximum speed, but as there is no
air, the temperature does still raise until thermal shutdown (especially
if the suspend/resume is done via APM, and the BIOS password screen pops
up. There is no hlt in the BIOS code!).
