It requires recompiling the driver (at least it was still so with version from
1 may 2008).

You need to add to config.mk the following lines
CONFIG_IWLWIFI_LEDS=y
CONFIG_IWL3945_LEDS=y
CONFIG_IWL4965_LEDS=y

I also added at the time:
CONFIG_IWLWIFI_RFKILL=y

to allow turning off the antenna from /sys
