Yes, I have been building custom kernels for many years. There are 
several config parameters that are not in the distro that are required 
to use thinkpad features. However I do not patch the kernel, I simply 
download source, unpack, configure, and build.  The only real questions 
are about use of patch. Thanks - Dan
