Hah! That fixed it. It was the "Speaker" switch that was off by default. Of
course it was located way out to the right of the screen in alsamixer,
which doesn't indicate that there is stuff off-screen :-(

And kmix in KDE4 doesn't display this switch by default, or indicate that it
is muted. That's got to be a bug...
