I've just been told on the xorg@freedesktop.org mailing list that if you
have the 'intel' driver for X (at least version 2.3) you can toggle
panel expansion with xrandr:
xrandr --output LVDS --set PANEL_FITTING center
xrandr --output LVDS --set PANEL_FITTING full_aspect
xrandr --output LVDS --set PANEL_FITTING full
I haven't tested that since Ubuntu comes with intel driver v2.2.1.
(Google gives me the checkin that added this feature on Mar 26, 2008 --
it's pretty recent.)
