[ltp] no sound from mic fc9

The system is fc9 on a thinkpad laptop using pulse.

This is a mic (sound) config issue, it all worked on fc7. (fc8 was a 
bust, but 9 is almost working)
Sound from the mic is heard from the speakers.
arecord does not record sound.
skype does not pickup mic sound.

alsamux shows card and chip set to pulse, view playback, capture, all, 
and item set to master.

How can this be debugged to support the mic being made available to 
recored? What are the toosl?
