I second this with Ubuntu 8.10 (2.6.27) on ThinkPad T41 (2373-2GG).
Everything worked fine in 8.04 (2.6.24), but now I'm getting this:
$ dmesg | grep bay

So it's not possible to correctly power off UltraBay device.
