Some years ago, that was only the case if the volume applet was loaded.
As the T20 I had has a nice hardware volume control, I turned off the
volume applet and could unload the sound driver during suspend.
Of course, not using something like esd might be needed too. I never was
a fan of esd, and alsa's dmix works quite nice nowadays.
