Try the xf86-video-ati, the recent version supports the X1400 from T60
pretty well. You get working 3D and *reliable* suspend/resume from RAM
as a bonus.

I have a 2007-FRG and this is the first time after two years that I'm
cmpletely happy with its performance and reliability :). Some configs
are at [1], perhaps they'll help you.

Oh, and updating BIOS/EC firmware *is* a good idea, as Henrique says
every time.
